Viva Mexico or the further adventures of the sweaty little chicken

Current mood: indescribable

We´re here in Mexico City, after a short little 4 hour flight and 1 hr sleep...

When we got to the hostel, they had a tour leaving for the Archeological Museum so we decided to go. Our guide, Elizabeth, took us and three British girls on the subway and then a crowded microbus to the museum. We thought that paying for a museum tour meant that we would be transported???

Once at the museum, Yolanda and I were completely burned out, so we left our lovely guide and cruised through the Azteca, Olmecs, Maya and culturas norteamericanas before buying some fresh potato chips from a street vendor and having her flag down the bus we needed to get home. Once on the extremely crowded microbus, with my fresh potato chips drenched in salsa sticking out of my purse (Ithought maybe I shouldn´t eat on the bus), some very nice people told us when to get off.

We walked back to our hostel and the entire street was full of street vendors selling swap meet type stuff and advertising their wares at the top of their lungs-I think they were actually competing with one another to see who could shout the loudest.

They gave us our room key so we trotted upstairs to our room. Bunk beds, no sheets. I went back down to ask for sheets and was told that they should be in the room. When I insisted that they weren´t in the room, Hector the desk guy said that they would be there ¨later¨. At this point you should probably be reminded that I was operating on one hour of sleep, hot, sweaty and probably hungry. I went back up to report to Yolanda about the current state of linens. Oh yeah, did I mention the lack of clean towels also? So I marched back downstairs and told the guy that I hadn´t slept and would really like to take a shower and go to sleep. He made some comment about of course, you see, if we just communicate we can work everything out. Whatever.

So I take the bundle of freshly laundered linens back upstairs only to find out that we were short a top sheet, but had an extra towel. Did I also mention that the blankets were piled on the single chair in our room, totally dirty? So I took a shower after I figured out how to turn on the hot water, Yolanda went to sleep, I went to sleep, someone came into our room but I didn´t even hear and Yolanda barely was able to open her eyees. We think it was probably housekeeping and she was startled to see us in bed.

We're also out of toilet paper. What do you expect for $35 a night? It´s fine, though, because we didn´t really come to sleep.

After the nap we wandered around outside. We are right behind the Palacio National (basically, White House) and a block away from the Cathedral. It´s pretty amazing. We ate dinner, but poor Yolanda was served an awful version of enchiladas. I on the other hand, am quite satisfied from my plate of chilaquiles verdes with a side of beans. yum.

Now it´s off to bed and tomorrow to Frida´s house. We´ll tackle the pyramids on Thursday.

aloha nui,
Alisa
